Breast milk is the food naturally designed to best meet the needs of human babies. It has all the necessary nutrients, in just the right amounts, and is easy to digest. Beyond the nutritional benefits, breast milk also helps build and support your baby’s immune system opined doctors during World breast feeding awareness week celebrations at Government Victoria Hospital, Visakhapatnam organised by the Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of Visakhapatnam chapter in association with Public Relations Society of India(PRSI).
Speaking during the celebrations Dr T Padmawati, President of Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of Visakhapatnam, said breastmilk constitutes a primordial form of health and development in infants. Breastfeeding establishes itself as the ideal food for kids during the first 6 months.
Underscoring the need for constant breastfeeding to the newborn kids, Dr D Hemalatha, medical superintendent of Government Victoria Hospital for Women and Children, said, “The first hour of life skin-to-skin contact while breastfeeding regulates a newborn’s body temperature and exposes them to good bacteria from their mother’s skin. “These good bacteria protect babies from infectious diseases and help build their immune systems.”
Dr Leela Digumarti, Public Awareness Committee in charge, Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of Visakhapatnam said Breastfeeding is highly recommended even during the COVID pandemic. The virus is not transmitted through breast milk. However, the mother, if infected, needs to take precautions to avoid spread via nasal droplets and touch. Washing hands before and after touching the baby, wearing a proper mask and not sneezing in front of the baby, cleaning and disinfecting surfaces, are the important precautions to be taken by a Covid positive mother while breastfeeding.
Others doctors spoke including Dr P Sailaja, Secretary of Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of Visakhapatnam, Dr. Usha Devi, Public awareness committee member of Obstetric and Gynaecological Society of Visakhapatnam and Dr G Soumini of Government Victoria Hospital.
