The Railway Board has decided to sanction 151 Linke Hofmann Busch (LHB) coaches for the year 2020-21 which will be deployed shortly, thus raising the holding to 291 LHB coaches at Visakhapatnam base. The LHB coaches, based on German technology, offer better riding comfort, lighter in weight, have higher speed potential as well as higher carrying capacity.
Speaking to Hello Vizag, Senior Divisional Commercial Manager A.K. Tripathi said that plans were also afoot to convert trains operating with conventional ICF type coaches with LHB coaches, in a phased manner based on necessity, demand, maintenance, and route feasibility. The Waltair Division also initiated up-gradation of conventional coaches with modern facilities, improved interiors, and exteriors under the project Utkrisht that was introduced in April 2018 by Railways.
In the first phase, Waltair Division converted 11 rakes into Utkirsht coaches. The coach care center at Visakhapatnam was given the task and accomplished the mission within target with well-furnished interiors, aesthetic outlook, and modern passenger-friendly amenities.
