Immunity seems to be on everyone’s minds right now and for good reason. As the number of coronavirus cases creeps up all over the world, it’s important we take care of our bodies, practice proper hygiene and eat a healthy diet. Conversely, running on a sleep deficit, living a sedentary lifestyle, and eating unhealthy foods will make your immune system weak. Let’s take a look at some of the absolute worst types of food for your immune system.
When people think about “energy” drinks, they’re usually referring to products that contain caffeine. The problem is that most “energy drinks” are loaded with too much caffeine and sugar to be healthy things to drink. So while they may give you a short-term burst of energy, you’ll ultimately crash and just want to zonk out. When you need a brain boost, you’re better off sipping green tea or snacking on a handful of walnuts.
GREASY FOODS AND REFINED CARBS
Pass on the burgers and fries. Greasy foods cooked in partially hydrogenated vegetable oils contain artificial trans fats. These fats lower the good cholesterol in your body, and they increase inflammation. Might as well ditch the bun, too. Studies have shown that refined carbohydrates (white breads, pastas, pancakes) cause a sharp insulin spike and create inflammation in the body.
SALTED FRIES- BLOATED THIGHS
Salt makes things taste better, even after they’ve been sitting under a heat lamp. Fast food restaurants love to pour on the salt to enhance the taste of their meals. The problem is that all that extra salt causes the body to retain water. The immune system becomes aggressive. When the body is sick, the defense team goes into a panic state. It begins working in overdrive. It quickly identifies any new attacks and responds faster than usual. When the body is continuously consuming foods that the body sees as harmful, the immune system is always in a heightened state of alert.
While you may not consider yourself an excessive or binge drinker, if you are someone who goes out on weekends and has 4-5 drinks in one evening then you fit into this category. Alcohol impairs your immune system by reducing function of T and B lymphocytes, natural killer cells and monocytes and macrophages, decreasing the inflammatory response and altering cytokine production .Alcohol is horrible for your immune system. Moderate alcohol consumption has been shown to have the opposite effect . Hurray for those who like an occasional glass of red wine. Thanks to those antioxidants that are beneficial to your immunity.
One of the most dangerous foods to immune health is processed foods. How come? Because there are many food companies out there who are using the terms “natural” to describe their product, even though their foods may have a hefty amount of refined carbohydrates, sugar, and hidden flavourings. Even organic processed foods, like cereal and bread, can contain immune-suppressing sugar. Processed foods are basically anything that comes in a package, contains more than one ingredient, and has been cooked and modified mechanically. Eating processed foods can lead to chronic irritation in the body. The toxins of a modern diet completely outweigh the possible nutritional gains. All this is leading us to weaker immune systems, higher rate of illnesses and diseases, and all-around poor health.
