The number of active cases is inching towards the 1,000 mark in Visakhapatnam district as over 100 fresh cases were reported for the third consecutive day. As many as 167 fresh positive cases were reported on Sunday, taking the total to 913. Twenty people were discharged after treatment during the same period. With this, the total number of people discharged till now went up to 60,392, according to AMC Principal and Covid Special Officer Dr. PV Sudhakar, in a statement issued here on Sunday.
He said most of the cases were reported in areas such as Madhurawada, Arilova and Pendurthi. The cases were rising as the people were not following Covid guidelines, he observed. Meanwhile, the vaccination drive is going on at a brisk pace in the district. “If 70 to 75 percent people are vaccinated, there will be herd immunity. In India, only five percent of people got vaccinated. In Visakhapatnam district, two lakh out of 30 lakh people were vaccinated. Though the district average is more than the national average, it is still a long way to go,” Sudhakar said.
He said the second dose for Covishield should be taken after six weeks and for Covaxin, it is four weeks. He said they were following the triple T methodology – testing, tracking and treatment- as suggested by the district collector. Meanwhile, the police continued their special drive in the city and rural areas to create awareness among people on the need to wear masks and maintain social distancing. The police are also levying penalties from those who do not wear masks.
Despite regulations of police and rising cases, there seems to be no change in crowd behaviour. Fishing harbor witnessed a huge rush on Sunday. Several people expressed concern over large gatherings at the fishing harbor. A government employee, Krishna, who came along with his son to buy the fish, returned after seeing the huge crowd. He said he was going back to avoid the rush.
