An alert was sounded in the port city of Kakinada after a massive fire that broke out on Tuesday at the Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL) near Malkapuram in Visakhapatnam. The Kakinada town has tens of small and large industries and several industrial estates in the industrial corridor, especially in Sarpavaram, Ramanaiahpeta and other suburb areas within the rural mandals. Three people were killed and four others were injured in a blast that occurred at a factory in Ramanaiahpeta recently on the day of Mahashivaratri.
The company paid the compensation to the kin of the deceased with the initiation of Minister Kannababu. But there was no information yet about the government’s compensation to the victims. Alerted by the huge fire that broke out reported in Visakhapatnam on Tuesday, the officials started conducting searches to inspect safety measures in the factories in the industrial estates of Kakinada. The authorities also alerted the labour and industrial safety departments. The district authorities directed to take precautionary measures to prevent incidents like HPCL in the city.
The industrial workers express fear that no industry maintains safety norms as most of the industries in the rural mandals were established decades ago. There were incidents of frequent gas leakages here. The authorities would create a rush for two to three days when such incidents occur. They became calm after accepting bribes and the industries run as usual without following the security norms.
