He is one of the world’s best Spy Master, fondly known as James Bond of India. He is the first police officer to receive Keerthi Chakra, which is one of the highest gallantry awards. Today, he is the National Security Officer to the Prime Minister of India, and his name is Ajit Kumar Doval.
Born in 1945 in the Gharwali family, Ajit Kumar inherited the spirit of nationalism from his father Major G N Doval, an officer in the Indian Army. After completing a master’s in economics, Doval joins IPS in the Kerala cadre. It was a learning and molding phase in Doval’s life that grooms him for higher responsibilities to come in the latter part of his life. From 1971 to 1999 Doval involves in the termination of all 15 hijackings of Indian aircraft. Doval was one of the three negotiators who made the release of passengers aboard IC-814 Kandahar in 1999 possible.
Going underground incognito and extracting secrets of enemies have been one of the greatest skills of Ajit Kumar Doval. He spent long periods incognito with Mizo National Army inside the Chinese territory of Arakan to topple the Mizo National Front insurgency and ensured that Mizoram continues to be a part of India.
Next, he plays a critical role in the merger of Sikkim in India. In 1988, when Khalistani militants took control of the Golden Temple in Amritsar, the situation was indeed tough as the Indian Government wanted to ensure that no harm comes to the civilians. It is then Doval gets in. Pretending to be a regular rickshaw-puller Doval befriended militants, gained entry inside the temple, and extracted crucial information that played a key role in the success of Operation Black Thunder.
The grand statesman and strategist spent 7 years in Pakistan as a spy. The founder of Multi-Agency Center (MAC) and Joint Task Force on Intelligence (JTFI) headed the operation of IB for more than a decade. Post-retirement he wrote papers, delivered lectures worldwide on strategic issues faced by India. In 2014, when the Modi government appoints him as NSA the new position directly put Doval in charge of talks with neighboring Pakistan. He was the brain behind the clever planning of the surgical Uri attack in 2016 and 2019 airstrike in Balakot that established India’s supremacy in Jammu and Kashmir.
Today, the Indian national security policy concerning Pakistan has gone a doctrinal shift from defensive to defensive offensive. Thanks to the great strategist and statesman Ajit Kumar Doval.
