AP Chief Secretary rescues of a group of migrant workers walking from Chennai to their home state Bihar amidst lockdown

The Chief Secretary of Andhra Pradesh, Nilam Sawhney while returning from Tadepalli after a meeting with Cheif Minister Y.S. Jagan Mohan Reddy on the issue of migrant workers on Friday, found a group of migrant workers walking on the road.

She had stopped her car and interacted with the workers regarding who they were and where they are heading. Those migrants informed her that due to lockdown and lack of any transport facility to return to their homes in Bihar, they are walking and going to their home from Chennai.

Moved by their difficulty, she immediately spoke to Joint Collector of Guntur district and Collector of Krishna district over phone and asked them to accommodate these workers immediately in the shelter camps and also to provide food and water. She had also asked the officials to ensure that these workers are sent to their state by the next available Shramik special train.

The migrant workers including women and youth were touched by her act of kindness and thanked her.

At a review meeting, the Chief Minister of AP has asked officials to provide counselling for the migrants who are walking back to their states during this lockdown and also accommodate them in relief camps, followed by transportation through Shramik trains. With the help of various NGOs in the state, food and water will be provided to such migrants along the highways.
