Andhra University, State Pollution Control Board and Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) signed an agreement here on Friday to deal with air pollution in the city. b move is a result of the National Knowledge Institute, launched by the Centre under the aegis of the National Clean Air Programme (NACP), giving the university the tag of Institute of Repute (IoR) to assist urban local bodies tackle the toxic air problem.
The NACP is being implemented in 131 identified non-attainment cities across the country, 13 of which are in Andhra Pradesh. Each local body needs to be guided by an ‘Institute of Repute’. Union Minister Prakash Javadekar, who witnessed the MoU signing programme virtually, spoke on the importance of clean air and suggested several measures to be taken in this regard. Similar agreements will be reached between the Universities. PCB and municipal corporations of Vizianagaram, Srikakulam, Eluru and Rajamahendravaram. Andhra University will act as the technical and knowledge partner for NACP implementation in all the mentioned cities.
