Prof. P.V.G.D. Prasada Reddy, Vice Chancellor, Andhra University has inaugurated the three day Online National Training Programme on “Disaster Risk Reduction in Resilient Infrastructure” organized by The Department of Civil Engineering, Andhra University College of Engineering, Visakhapatnam and National Institute of Disaster Management (NIDM), New Delhi in association with Indian Geotechnical Society, Visakhapatnam Chapter.
The event is coordinated by Prof. C.N.V. Satyanarayana Reddy, AU and Dr. Amir Ali Khan, NIDM. During the Inaugural address, Prof. P.V.G.D. Prasad Reddy has urged the civil engineers for their preparedness to minimize disaster risk in infrastructure of public importance as disaster occurrence in unavoidable and unpredictable. He quoted some of the measures adopted in the resilient infrastructure of Visakhapatnam city after the devastating Hudhud cyclone in October 2014.
Prof. C.V.R. Murty, IITMadras has delivered a lecture on “Earthquake Resistant Infrastructure”. He has stressed the need for keeping provisions in seismic resistant design of Public and Hospital buildings, Bridges, Highway structures and Pipe networks of Oil storage tanks. He suggested to retrofit the existing and old structures to make them withstand the earthquake induced loads and to design new structures following IS 1893 and NDMA guidelines.
Prof. Pradeep Muzumdar, IISc., Bangalore has delivered a lecture on “Urban Floods- An Evolving Challenge”. Various causes for Urban Flooding such as Reduced infiltration of rainwater into subsoil due to increased concrete constructions, encroachments into water bodies such as lakes/ reservoirs, inadequate capacity of drains to cater to peak water flow during heavy rainfall, were explained during the lecture.
He has presented the model studies on recent urban flooding in Chennai, Mumbai and Bangalore cities. He has suggested the use of porous concrete in pavements to improve infiltration into subsoil and to adopt underground drains for discharging the rain water away from the city limits.
Prof. Peri Srinivasa Rao, Principal, A.U. College of Engineering, Dr Amir Ali khan, NIDM, Prof. T.V. Praveen and Prof. D.S.R. Murty of Civil Engg. Dept., AU spoke on the occasion Prof. C.N.V. Satyanarayana Reddy, Coordinator of the event, informed that on the second day of the training programme, i.e., on 1st October 2020, Dr. P. Hari Krishna, Chief Scientist, SERC, Chennai, will deliver a talk on “Wind Disaster Mitigation for Infrastructure” and Prof. K. Srinivasa Rao, Andhra University will deliver a lecture on “Influence of Concrete Characteristics on Heat Resistance –A Review”.
The live stream of second day of the training programme can be viewed on YouTube via the link: https://youtu.be/88hszAosPpU More than 300 Participants comprising Practicing Engineers from state and central government departments, consulting firms, faculty members, research scholars and students from various IITs, NITs, Universities and other Engineering colleges of the country attended the first day of the programme.
