It’s a historic day for the people of Vizag. Finally, Vizag hoisted a Blue flag along with Tricolour at Rushikonda Beach, marking the induction of the most beautiful beach in Andhra Pradesh which places it in the league of world-class beaches and can attract global tourists in droves to the golden sands and tidy waves of the Bay of Bengal.
It is the only beach to be selected in AP for this flag. Blue Flag is certification by Denmark based Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) that a beach meets international standards. With this certification, Rushikonda beach will get Rs. 7.5 crore for improving facilities and maintenance by the Government of India.
Speaking on the occasion, Tourism Minister Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao said Blue Fla beaches attract international tourists. Maritime villages are expected to get sustainable employment due to tourists coming. He said a total Rs. 7.3 core central funds had been spent on Rushikonda beach under the BEAMS (Beach Environment and Aesthetics Management Services) project, which ensures coastal protection and enhancement of local livelihoods through sustainable tourism activities. These are among the 33 parameters required for Blue Flag certification.
The minister, who interacted with the Union minister for the environment Prakash Javadekar on the occasion, said he has required the central minister to sanction funds for nine more beaches in Andhra Pradesh and enable them to get Blue Flag status. These beaches include Erramatti Dibbalu in the Vizag district, Suryalanka in Guntur, Kakinada, and Chintalamuri in Esat Godavari, Manginapudi in Krishna, Ramapuram in Prakasam, and Mypadu in Nellore district.
Stating further he said the government is also planning to develop 5 star and 6 star hotels at 12 places. Mr. Srinivasa Rao said the government is very much keen on developing a nearly 1000 km coastline in AP, the second largest after Gujarat with tourism infrastructure. And it will encourage the PPP model of development.
