International Yoga Day falls on the 21st of June of each year, with a different theme which is commemorative of the essence of the respective year. The theme for International Yoga Day 2020 is “Yoga at Home and Yoga with Family.”
International Yoga Day came into existence when Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed the idea of a Yoga Day in the United Nations General Assembly on 27th September, 2014. The draft resolution was then endorsed by 177 member states of the UN.
Being practised in India since as far back as the 5th century, Yoga claims rightfully the benefits of its daily practice. Yoga is advantageous to the mind and body alike, as the asanas help in the alignment of our energies with the flexibility and health of our body.
Certain asanas in yoga also claims to have blood purification features, and combined with the energy cleansing and meditation (dhyaan), it is perfect for bringing a sense of calm and peace to your mind and body. It is often used as a form of healing and therapy.
Yoga is also extremely beneficial in the time of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, as it helps in building a strong immunity. It is also known to cure disorders of the respiratory system, as some asanas help in increasing the amount of oxygen that we take in. Due to this, our blood and organs recieve a high amount of oxygen, which results in better functioning and a stronger immune system.
Yoga is also being adapted into international cultures for its medicinal qualities. It started recieving more and more traction and promotion when International Yoga Day took birth. Companies and institutions alike started workshops, classes and seminars on the importance of this ancient Indian practice.
This year’s theme is relevant as 2020 is not the year for public mass gatherings. At home, with family,is the way you need to start or continue this journey of wellness and calm. We, at Visakhapatnam, are lucky to have a lot of instructors and yoga centres in our city, with Yoga Village on RK Beach being the most well known.
