Chinese firm Zhenhua was found to be collecting personal and important information about contacts, call data, family, business affairs etc of 10,000 Indians including President RamNath Kovind and PM Narendra Modi.

It has been collecting information of 2.4 million individuals globally which included politicians, scholars, tech heads, leaders, public sector employees, scientists etc.

This firm was found to have Chinese military and Communist party links. One of the Chinese firm called China Revival has created a database to steal the data. The database is called Overseas Key Information Data Base (OKIDB) and it is known to contain information of 2.4 million individuals, 2.1 billion social media posts, 2.3 billion news articles and 6,50,000 institutions.

Researchers have found that 10 to 20% information in this database is not available in public domain. It is known that the unavailable data in public domain is collected through hacking or dark web. This firm is also known to have collected information on back records, family information, workplace information, information of higher officials of universities etc.

India’s key individuals and their families and close contacts data is also gathered and is known to be available in the database. Key individuals include President RamNath Kovind, PM Narendra Modi, Nirmala Sitharaman, Piyush Goyal, Smriti Irani, Mamata Banerjee, Sonia Gandhi, Uddhav Thackeray, Chief Justice of India, Chief of Defense, present and former chiefs of Army, Navy and Defence, famous film actors, tech heads, and the list continuous. This data is known to be used by Chinese military and defence authorities also.
