After a brief lull as the festive season begins, the Vizag city traffic police has launched a crackdown on illegal parking outside the shopping malls, busy stretches, and a few other places in the city to avoid traffic congestion. Police are also cracking the whip on commercial establishments that failed to provide cellar parking for vehicles as per the guidelines. Festive rush adds to the mounting parking problems that denizens face due to lack of parking slots. Due to an increase in illegal parking, especially in front of shopping malls and business centres in the city, the police have launched the drive.
Speaking to Hello Vizag, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Ch Adinarayana said that the drive against illegal parking was aimed at creating awareness among the motorists, not collecting fines from them for illegally parking. “The drive will continue for some more days. The violators will be counselled first and later we will impose a fine of over Rs 1,000 in addition to charges required for towing their vehicles. Incorrect parking is one of the major issues at Daba Gardens, Jagadamba Junction, Siripuram, Maddilapalem, VIP Road, MVP Colony, Gajuwaka, Goapalapatnam and few other places in Vizag city as the incorrect parking has been fueling traffic congestion,” Adinarayana added.
The commercial establishment should provide cellar parking space for vehicles. However, the majority of the commercial establishments in the city don’t have parking facilities at the cellars. The GVMC has to act against the management of the commercial establishments for not providing the parking spaces, they added. The traffic police are claiming that lack of space for parking can never be an excuse for illegal parking. Moreover, the municipal corporation is unable to create parking spaces at the busy stretches. Motorists are always victims of the illegal parking incidents in the city, said P Sudhakar, a resident of MVP Colony.
