March 18 will be the historic day for the city of destiny because a new mayor and deputy mayor will be elected after newly-elected members take the oath. GVMC officials have spruced up the new council hall according to the required infrastructure needed for the corporators. The district collector V Vinay Chand said that at 11 a.m., the swearing-in ceremony will be held for the newly-elected corporators and they have to carry in person the election certificate that was issued to them after winning the polls.
The old council hall was renovated as Command Control Centre for smart city operations. The existing new council hall has been arranged at the extreme left in the second floor near the Engineering Department with fully air-conditioned with 20 large benches ( 10 in a row) with a seating capacity of 100 people for the 98 corporators, apart from special blocks for the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor in front. As part of the renovations reportedly worth Rs. 99 lakh, seating arrangements for 120 members were made, and a visitors’ gallery and chambers for the commissioner and secretary were made GVMC chief engineer M Venkateswara Rao said. Also, special chambers were created for the Mayor and the Deputy Mayor near the council hall, he said.
Though the terms of the lat council, which was elected in 2007, ended in 2012, fresh elections could not be held for almost nine years. The hall modernization works were launched after the State Election Commissioner issued notification for the civic polls in March last year. However, the revamp was halted due to Covid-19, and taken up again recently.
After commissioner Nagalakshmi S administers the oath to the 98 newly-elected members in English, Telugu, Hindi, or Urdu (as per the members’ choice), elections for the posts of mayor and deputy mayor will begin. The TDP ward members will meet on Wednesday to elect their floor leader, and are likely to choose Peela Srinivasa Rao for the role, sources in the party said. Meanwhile, Collector V Vinay Chand has held a meeting on the mayoral election with representatives of the parties. He said 113 members, including 15 ex-officio and 98 ward members, will participate in the election.
