Crane Mishap in Hindustan Ship Yard in Visakhapatnam


It seems untoward accidents are order of the day in Visakhapatnam. Close on the heels of LG Polymers gas Leak, explosion at Ramky pharma city and Major fire at Gateway CFS yard, denizens today shocked to witness another incident that occurred where in at least 8 persons lost their lives and several others were trapped under crane that came crashing at Hindustan Shipyard in Visakhapatnam at 1200 hrs.

The crane crashed while the load testing was underway. Rescue teams were trying to save the trapped workers. Ambulances were kept ready for rushing the injured persons to hospitals. Dead bodies were retrieved from under the crane. Officials are verifying the attendance records to ascertain the exact number of persons on duty at the crane at the time of the mishap. A trade union leader said the crane was overloaded and hence crumbled.

The crane crashed while maintenance works were underway State Minister Avanthi Srinivas has asked the officials to provide the best possible treatment to the injured workers. The family members of the workers came running to the shipyard, knowing about the accident. They said the police were preventing them from entering the premises and the officials were not able to give them information about their beloved ones. City Police commissioner RK Meena arrived at the spot.

The crane is said to be acquired recently. Kumar, a trade union leader said the crane was not handed over to the shipyard management by a company named Anupam. He said the testing was carried out without safety measures in place.
