University of Hyderabad (UoH) had carried out a research in collaboration with National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) and Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (ONGC). Their study has found a major fault line along the coast of East Godavari to Srikakulam which could trigger earthquakes and tsunamis in the future if it becomes active. The study revealed that the fault line was active until 0.3 million years ago before becoming inactive.
The study published in Journal of Earth System Science mentioned that the fracture line or fault line is currently inactive and may become active if the differential stresses on either side the fault line reaches threshold level and may turnout to be a geohazard event in the future. The faultline is Spread across 300km radius and is located at a distance of100km from coastline. It is known to possess a great threat to Visakhapatnam in the form of Tsunamis and earthquakes, and Northern Andhra Pradesh will be at risk, in the future if it becomes active.
