In a bid to provide a safe drinking water facility to every nook and corner in the state, the government of Andhra Pradesh embarked on a mission mode to get rid of drying up of boreholes and wells. In addition to providing drinking water needs of the people, the AP Government has decided to provide tap water to every household for their daily needs.
So far, 31.93 lakh households have water taps out of 95.66 lakhs in villages across the state, So, the government coming forward to provide water tap connections to the remaining 63.73 lakh households. The Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Department is a nodal agency in the State for providing drinking water has prepared master plans to provide water tap within a four-year period.
The AP government expects to spend Rs 10,975 crore on drinking water in every village in the next four years. However, half of the cost will be borne by the Jala Jeevan Mission program provided by the Central government. It has been decided to provide tap connections to 32 lakh households in the first year, 25 lakhs in the second year, five lakhs in the third year, and new tap connections in the remaining houses in the fourth year.
Villages with a capacity of 75 percent water supply will be given first priority and taps will be installed in the houses in those villages to provide drinking water. The freshwater scheme will be set up first in the villages where there are overhead tanks and drinking water will be provided to the remaining villages within a period of four years. With this decision taken by the government, the water woes of the people in the rural areas are on the coast.
