Hello Vizag The Helen O’ Grady Drama Academy is back with the popular Shakespeare Slam – The Battle of the Bard, in an all new virtual format.
Shakespeare SLAM’s aim is to make the works of William Shakespeare accessible to all through performance. Shakespeare is an integral part of school learning across India and we believe performing his works is the best way to understand them.
Students from schools across the country shall be participating in this competition, which will be adjudged by eminent and international judges.
The previous Slams had given wonderful performances from school teams from across the country. The fascinating performing skills had brought to life the eternal favourites like Macbeth, The Tempest, Hamlet, Julius Caesar, Othello and many more! Sterling performances mesmerised hundreds of students and people in more than eleven cities in the country.
Helen O’Grady International is the only organization of its kind in the world. In 1979, it all began in Australia when Helen O’Grady, a trained drama teacher and actress, hired a hall in Perth and commenced after-school drama classes for children. Her aim was simple, yet a unique one – to promote personal development through drama.
Today, the Academy offers personal development programmes for children, adolescents and adults, furthering the following aspects: Enthusiasm and Optimism, Ongoing Confidence, Self-Esteem, Verbal Communication Skills and Effective Social Interaction.
In this unique year, on the virtual platform, they invite Individual talent to showcase their ability through Mono Acts and Soliloquies from William Shakespeare’s plays to win the coveted Shakespeare Slam trophy.
They are awarding cash prizes & vouchers for free classes to the winners of the competition. The Top 6 participants will also get an opportunity to participate in Shakespeare Festivals on a global platform.
Some of the tangible benefits for the performing students will be:
1. A love for literature – students will have to read and understand the scripts written by the master storyteller. In today’s age of virtual and electronic screen time taking up most of the student’s free time, the time spent reading good literature is a very positive outcome.
2. Individual performances will enhance growth in self-confidence & self-esteem and will allow students to focus on the task at hand. Each character needs to deliver lines and focus on the body language and the coordination between the mind and body resulting in holistic development of an individual.
