Fifth Annual Boccia National Championship, the sport ‘Boccia’ of the Paralympic Games, was inaugurated at GITAM Deemed to be University on Wednesday. The game is played by differently-abled competitors that require the use of a wheelchair. Para Boccia Sports Welfare Society of India is organizing this national event at GITAM Sri Kodi Ramamuhrty Indoor Stadium.
While inaugurating the championship, GITAM President M Sribharath welcomed all differently-abled participants and said they were a source of inspiration to all able-bodied persons. He mentioned that para-athletes have a unique strength of character that combines mental toughness, physical ability and outstanding agility to produce sporting performances that regularly redefine the boundaries of possibility.
Visakhapatnam West segment MLA P Gannababu appreciated for organizing a unique sport with a great social cause. Boccia India President Jaspreet Singh Dhaliwal said that para-athletes maximize their abilities, thus empowering and exciting others to participate in the sport. He said the game is played by Differently-abled players with a physical disability that requires the use of a wheelchair.
GITAM Vice-Chancellor K Sivaramakrishna, registrar D Gunasekharan, Paralympics Committee of India President Deepa Malik, Paraboccia Association of Andhra Pradesh President Shiva also took part in the ceremony.
