Google Honours India’s long distance swimmer and Olympian Aarti Saha. Google released a doodle as a part of celebrating the 80th birth anniversary of Aarti Saha, who was not only India’s long distance swimmer but also the first Asian woman to swim across the English channel on 29th September 1959.
Born on 24th September 1940 in Kolkata, she managed to cross the channel which is around 67 km in her second attempt. Aarti hosted the Indian flag after completing her swim in 16 hours. She had also represented the subcontinent in Summer Olympics 1952.
In 1960 she was honoured with Padma Shri, the fourth highest civilian honour in the country. She was the first Indian Sports women to receive Padma Shri. Aarti Saha who was also known as Aarti Gupta was introduced to swimming when she was 4 years old. Indian postal department has released a stamp in 1999 in her honour.
