After achieving a 3-star rating in Swachha Survekshan 2020 at the national level on the basis of performance in six indicators, including segregation of waste into wet, dry, and hazardous categories, the processing capacity of the generated wet waste, processing and recycling of wet and dry waste, construction and demolition (C&D) waste management, percentage of waste going to landfills and sanitation, the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation has bagged the distinction of honour for best performing Municipal Corporation in India under Prime Minister’s Awas Yojana (PMAY), the “ambitious scheme for all” by the Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs.
Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Urban) is a vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi of India which was launched in June 2015 with an aim to provide affordable houses with water facility, sanitation and electricity supply round-the-clock to urban poor. The government has identified 305 cities and towns have been identified in 9 states for the beginning construction of these affordable houses.
Under PMAY, it is proposed to build 2 crore houses for urban poor, including Economically Weaker Sections and Low Income Groups in urban areas by the year 2022 through the financial assistance of Rs 2 trillion from central government.
The features of Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana are that the government will provide an interest subsidy of 6.5 percent on housing loans availed by the beneficiaries for a period of 15 years from the start of a loan. The houses under Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana would be constructed through a technology that is eco-friendly. Its prime objective is to deliver the project by 2022. The houses under this scheme will be allocated to the females of the family or jointly with males.
Expressing her happiness on the much-needed achievement, GVMC Commissioner G Srijana said that it would not have been possible without the involvement of committed citizens and disciple shown by the people of the city. On top of that, she thanked the Chief Minister, Municipal Minister, TIDCO officials, and all other and other officials who lend requisite support in constructing of houses for the poor and needy people in the corporation limits. She exhorted that, in the future also, the corporation will make all sincere and dedicated endeavors to provide housing to each and every eligible poor in the city.
