Vizag’s Unlock 1.0 was expected to have good news for the owners of gyms in the city. They had hoped of being included in the relaxations, starting from June 1st, after their operations had closed down two months ago.
Several gym owners held a meeting on Saturday, to discuss the guidelines to be followed if gyms were allowed to resume operations. “Situation is so bad that we are unable to pay rent.”, reported The Hindu, quoting a gym owner. By evening, it was announced that gyms had to remain shut till further announcements.
A lot of them had a common issue regarding the shopping malls opening from June 8th, as they believed that the needs of health conscious people were being ignored. “We closed gyms on March 20 and even now, we are paying rents. I am paying ₹30,000 rent for gym place, apart from my house rent and other expenses. We gym owners also fear that the equipment will need repairs if they are not used properly,” said K. Ganesh, president, Visakha Gym Owners Welfare Association, reported The Hindu. He added that the government should pass an order directing owners not to collect rents from gym owners.
The common worry among them seems to be their future, due to the heavy loss incurred during the lockdown. The majority of the gyms operate in rented buildings, for which the owners have not been able to pay rent for.
