illegal construction of Kamat Hotel razed by GVMC in Vizag

The GVMC officials, along with police personnel, demolished the first floor of the Kamat Hotel in Lawson’s bay colony yesterday due to unauthorized construction, gross violation of Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) norms apart from encroaching government land.

This drive came close on the heels of the demolition of a go-kart park at Mangamaripeta beach, due to illegal occupation of government land. The Kamat hotel constructed in 1053 square yards in China Waltair limits and falls in survey no of 42/2C2, 42/2C3, 42/2C4. The entire demolition drive was personally supervised by city planner Prabhakar and ACP Zone 3 Bhaskar Babu and others.

In the past, GVMC has razed 70 buildings, numerous unauthorized floors, sheds, and staircases over the last five days According to reports, some politicos who exercised undue influence over the GVMC through all these days are fearful that their interests might be affected. There are reports that a former minister’s camp office in Bheemili and a former MLA’s building in Seethampeta are also on the hit-list of GVMC officials and they might receive notices in the next few days. Speaking on condition of anonymity, a senior official of the town planning department, said many more demolition drives will be undertaken against illegal structures occupying the city by the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) in the future.

Speaking to Hello Vizag, chief city planner, RJ Vidyullatha said that the drive against unauthorized and illegal constructions will continue. “We have asked town planning officials and employees to report about illegal structures in their respective zones,” she added. “After the capital city was announced, many have started constructing compound walls illegally. We have taken up a special drive on them. We are also checking CRZ violations along the stretch. We have received complaints about the violations by the facility and action was taken,” she said.

In a recent review meeting with GVMC officials, the minister of tourism and youth advancement, M Srinivasa Rao made it clear that the government was against illegal structures occupying the city space. He has reportedly directed GVMC officials to go all out against these structures. However, a section of city residents have demanded that the GVMC focus on structures that have violated CRZ norms.
