India wins the UN’s ECOSOC body elections; China fails


India became a member of United Nations Commission on Status of Women (UNCSW). India has won the election held on September 14 to become the member of UNCSW, a body of the Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). India has secured 38 votes, 10 votes more than the majority required.

In this election China has failed to win. Out of the 28 votes required to win it has just secured 27 votes, one less than the required number. Even though 54 member countries have casted their votes but China has even failed to secure the halfway mark.

With this win India will be a member of the UNCSW for a period of four years starting from 2021 to 2025. Permanent representative of India to the United Nations Tirumurti took it to Twitter today to announce that India wins seat in prestigious ECOSOC body.

He also added that, India elected Member of Commission on Status of Women. It is ringing endorsement of our commitment to promote gender equality and women’s empowerment in all our endeavours. He thanked the member states for their support on behalf of India.
