Innovative napping pod by Vizag Startup

When your body wants to take a nap on the job, why not succumb to it? More and more people are beginning to recognize that napping isn’t just for toddlers. The benefits are clear: Napping helps you to regain concentration, and it also boosts your productivity. It can reduce anxiety and depression by minimizing your levels of cortisol, which is a hormone that elevates your blood sugar. Nearly 50 percent of Indians say that insufficient sleep affects their daily activities. The implications extend beyond health. Lack of sleep costs Indian companies a staggering loss in productivity.

Recognizing the importance of sleep as a mechanism of consolidating information, dealing with the events of the day, and recharging our energy, a start-up called Urbanpod Innovation Private Limited in incubation at IIM-Visakhapatnam (IIM-V) is building smart napping pods with a zero-gravity bed in the urban spaces for rest. Realizing that their employees’ health if one of the most important predictor of the company, many companies actually endorse napping in the workplace, by providing designated rooms for napping around.

Urbanpod Innovation Private Limited is one among five start-ups handpicked by IIM-V to incubate under its Technology Incubation and Entrepreneurship Development (TIDE 2.0) G3 Centre, sanctioned by the Union ministry of electronics and information technology (MeitY). The Centre has got a grant-in-aid of Rs1.7crore from MeitY to play the role of an angel investor for the chosen tech start-ups. Apart from providing commercialization or prototyping grant, IIM-V is offering mentorship, incubation and networking support to these start-ups.

Speaking to Hello Vizag, IIM-V director Prof M Chandrasekhar said that the five selected start-ups are working on products and services based on various cyber-physical systems including Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence, machine modularity and sensors. Prof Mohammed Shameem Jawed, faculty member as well as director and COO of IIMV-Field, said that the institute has created a co-working space for 40 ventures. “In all, the five start-ups have registered three technology and one design patent. The application was filed for another patent,” Prof Jawed said.
