The Vizag city police on Monday arrested a recovery agent of instant loan apps whose harassment had led to the suicides of some people during the Covid-induced lockdown. One Gautham Mule, working as loan recovery agent with instant loan financing (online loan) app, Hyper Tails at Koregaon Park, Cosmos Bank in Pune of Maharashtra was arrested in connection with the suicide of a 25- year-old-woman, Mandava Ahalada, a resident of Gajuwaka in Vizag city.
Three others Parasuram Lahu, Liang Tiantian, and HR Hakib Sheik are also said to be responsible for abetting the suicide of the woman. DCP (Crimes) V Suresh Babu said that Mandava Ahalada ended her life by hanging on November 3, 2020, unable to bear the harassment, mental agony, and humiliation meted out to her by the agents of instant loan app over non-payment of loans availed.
Gajuwaka police had launched an investigation on the basis of a complaint lodged by Ahalada’s mother Usha Rani after registering a case under Section 306 of IPC (abetment of suicide). They handed over the case to the central crime station for further investigation. The family members told police that she was depressed due to the harassment meted out to her for failing to give in to the demands of loan app companies. The loan recovery agents repeatedly sent voice messages and humiliating messages to her.
