Meet Hasitha Illa who is standing tall against all odds

a country-wide lockdown has taught everyone how hard it is to stay at home during this Covid-19 outbreak. The wheelchair-bound persons undergo the same trauma for a lifetime. Hello, Vizag brings to you the story of Hasitha Illa who is a wheel-chair bound lady and is spreading awareness through impactful writings, paintings, and speeches to bring a positive attitude among people across the country.

Despite being confined to a wheelchair from an early age, Hasitha Illa from Kakinada has overcome the social stereotypes and has changed people’s perception towards disability. She is now a motivational speaker and author.

At the age of 10 years, Hasitha Illa was diagnosed with Friedreich Ataxia (FA), a rare inherited disease that causes progressive nervous system damage and movement problems. It has no cure even in advanced countries. However, she moved on to lead a normal life.

Living with her parents in the US, she had been through depression, discrimination, bullying, non-stop doctor visits, physiotherapy, and counseling sessions for the past 15 years. Later, her family shifted to India. She joined the heartfulness meditation center in Chennai where she found many friends and moulded herself into a stronger person. The same organization invited her to speak on stage with a 50,000 audience.

“This event has boosted my confidence and allowed me to have more opportunities to give motivational speeches at various programs in schools and colleges,” said Hasitha, who completed B Tech in Biotechnology from DY Patil University, Pune. She also did a project in the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB), Hyderabad.

She has bagged the Global Women Empowerment Award 2019 from Visionary Global VG MRS India that acknowledges the achievements of incredible Indian women. Now, she has a website called, where she writes blogs and articles to spread positivity as well as awareness on various disability-related problems. In the current lockdown period, she is penning a book on similar issues.
