Mega Actor turned politician K Chiranjeevi on Wednesday extended support to rapidly intensifying agitation against the Central Government’s decision to privatise the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant. He took to Twitter to say that the steel plant is a symbol of so many sacrifices. So, “Let’s rise above parties and regions. And save the Vizag Steel plant. He is the first celebrity from the Telugu speaking states to have spoken out against the proposed disinvestment of the Government of India’s share in VSP. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Monday told Parliament that the Centre planned 100 percent disinvestment in RINLVSP.
Remembering his good old days, Chiranjeevi said during the agitation for setting up of Vizag Steel plant, I was studying at Narasapuram’s YNM College in Andhra Pradesh. He said that he remembers how people were rallying behind the steel plant, with the slogans “Visakha Ukka, Andhrula Hakku” (Visakha Steel is the right of every Andhra person). He said that many people sacrificed their lives for the steel plant, and that those sacrifices will not go in vain, and that those sacrifices will not be forgotten. The actor-politician said that every single person belonging to AP felt pride when the steel plant was announced.
Chiranjeevi criticised the fact that no captive mines were allotted for the steel plant, and how the Centre now plans to privatise the institution claiming that it is not yielding profits. He said that it is better for the Centre to take a step back regarding privatisation of the plant, considering that there are many lives dependent on it and their lives would drastically be affected. He sincerely appealed to each and everyone to own up the responsibility to save the plant from being privatised and that this issue goes beyond any politics, rivalries and parties.
