The International Cricket Council (ICC) has confirmed the new schedule for the Men’s and Women’s T20 World Cup tournaments on Friday. The global pandemic has affected the cricket tournaments and conduct of the T20 World Cup in 2020. Therefore the ICC has postponed the ” Men’s T20 World Cup 2020″, which is to be held in Australia in October- November to 2022. A new qualification process will be carried out for the 2022 Men’s T20 World Cup.
The tickets which were sold for the T20 World Cup in Australia will be fully refunded. The ICC Women’s Cricket World Cup” which was scheduled to be held in February 2021 at New Zealand was postponed to February-March in 2022. The qualification event for deciding the 3 remaining teams will be held in 2021.
The Men’s T20 World Cup 2021 will take place in India as per the plan. The format of this World Cup will remain as it was for the 2020 edition and the teams which were already qualified for the 2020 edition will now participate in the 2021 World Cup. While a new qualification process will be carried out for the 2022 edition.
No international women’s cricket events were held since the completion of ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in February-March this year where Australia defeated India in the final on March 8, 2020. So postponing the event by 12 months would give the teams the chance to play a sufficient level of cricket and time for good preparation ahead of qualifying events as well as the World Cup so the integrity of the tournament is maintained, said the Chief Executive Manu Sawhney.
