A slew of measures initiated by the Indian Railways amid the Covid-19 pandemic is yielding fruitful good results in containing the spread of infection related to coronavirus. One among the so many is a novel woman safety initiative of the railways called Meri Saheli (My Friend) was launched in AP Express, which runs between Visakhapatnam-New Delhi. The basic aim of the initiative is to provide better safety and security to women passengers traveling by trains throughout their journey. Also, this initiative is aimed to instill a sense of security among the lady passengers and respond effectively to any security-related issue faced or seen by lady passengers.
Speaking to Hello Vizag, Senior Divisional Security Commissioner, Jitendra Srivastava, said in order to provide proactive security to women passengers, a team of women Sub Inspectors and women constables of Railway Protection Force (RPF) has been deployed in trains throughout their journey. And these women passengers will be briefed about all precautions to be taken during the journey and inform about helpline number 182 apart from giving contact numbers of RPF to contact in case of any issue.
Apart from these, RPF staff on platform duty at the stopping stations, RPF escort party available on the train will contact the passengers during the period of stoppage and enquire the problems if any. The process will be continued until the train reaches the destination. The senior officers of the respective division will monitor and dispose of the distress call comes from a train under ‘Meri Saheli’,” he said.
