With the announcement of Visakhapatnam being executive Capital, the proposed 140 km long mass rapid transport system gaining pace with sure shot deadlines. Once it starts, it will change the landscape of public transport system which will cover every corner of the city and suburbs and connect Bhogapuram Airport region in the North to Anakapalle in the south of Vizag. The project is estimated to cost around Rs 20,000 crore. Of the 140.11km-long project, 79.91km is proposed to be developed as a light metro rail system. The remaining 60.2km corridors will have a caternary-free modern tram/metrolite system.
The project comes under the purview of Visakhapatnam Metropolitan Region Development Authority (VMRDA). The DPR for the 60km-long tram network will be completed by December. Even though the initial DPR was prepared for only 42.55km, the state government has decided to extend the corridors considering the new Greenfield international airport coming up at Bhogapuram. Tendering process for the both expected to be completed by the end. The project will be taken up on a public-private partnership. According to Andhra Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation (AMRC) sources selection of the developer and the concession agreement are likely to be completed by March 21, 2021 and works will be launched June, 2021
Consequently, the AMRC prepared a detailed mass rapid transit system master plan covering 140km length. Officials estimate that the 79.91km-long Visakhapatnam light metro (with 3 lines & 31 stations proposed to be built in Visakhapatnam) will cost around Rs 16,000 crore with cost per kilometre pegged at Rs 200 crore and the tram network will cost around Rs 100 to Rs. 120 crore per kilometre.
In 2017, the project was put on hold due to its high cost and low ridership projections which were not in line with the Government of India’s new Metro Rail Policy. In addition, the AP government had given priority to Vijayawada’s metro. In December 2019, the AP government decided to appoint a new consultant to prepare the project’s new/revised Detailed Project Report for a 79.91 km Phase 1 for implementation under the public–private partnership (PPP) model with an estimated cost of Rs. 8,300 cr. In March 2020, Urban Mass Transit Company Limited (UMTC) was announced by AMRC as the winner to prepare Vizag Metro’s new DPR.
