Yet another mishap occurred in Aurobindo Pharma Unit in Pydibheemavaram village in Ranasthalam Mandal of Srikakulam wherein at least seven workers, including five women, were injured when a water tank collapsed due to alleged storage of steel water beyond its capacity. All injured people were shifted to Mellimarla MIMS hospital. In 2016, A chemist and two contract workers sustained severe burns in a blast at the manufacturing unit of Aurobindo Pharma Limited apparently owing to overheating of a reactor.
Industrial mishaps in north Andhra Pradesh, comprising Visakhapatnam, Vizianagaram, and Srikakulam districts, have raised concerns surrounding the safety of workers. In the past, several accidents have been reported in pharma, chemical, manufacturing units at regular intervals claiming the lives of workers in these units.
Sources said that only 60 percent of the industrial units in the north Andhra region follow prescribed safety and maintenance norms.
Local residents who spoke to Hello Vizag said that Despite claiming lives and causing injury to employees, no promoter of an industrial unit has been arrested or any official been suspended. It shows that the nexus between political leaders and industrialists was behind those responsible for the mishaps not being booked.
Speaking on condition of anonymity with Hello Vizag, a senior officer from the inspectorate of factories said that they remained silent on violations in the industries on account of political intervention, adding that “Our duty is confined to issuing warnings to the management of the industries whenever there is an accident.”
