An infant who tested positive for Covid-19 after nine days of birth has been discharged after recovery. The newborn was admitted to Medicover hospitals in Visakhapatnam with a severe respiratory problem and was kept in ICU.
Initial findings were suggestive of pneumonia and the baby was given high-end IV antibiotics. Later, anticipating postnatally acquired Covid infection, the sample was sent for RTPCR, which turned positive.
The infant was isolated and ventilator care continued with round-the-clock nursing and specialist care. Later, Remdesivir was given for 5 days. Chief neonatologist Dr. Sai Sunil Kishore said the infant could be retrieved from the deadly virus with the help of expert treatment and round-the-clock monitoring by a team of doctors. Currently, the health condition of the infant is stable. Medicover Hospital has established a separate Covid ICU for suspected positive neonates.
