In contrast to the AP Government’s line of thinking of making English the medium of instructions in schools, Prime Minister Narendra Modi strongly vouched for the use of mother tongue as the medium of instruction in a program ‘Shiksha Parv’, an event organized by the Union Education Ministry.
He said people trapped in bookish knowledge, often fail to grasp that language is a way to communicate knowledge but not the entire knowledge in itself. Making it clear that while local languages were being promoted in the New Educational Policy (NEP), Mr. Modi said there was no bar at all on the teaching of English or any other language that can be helpful on the global stage.
Of course, there is no dispute regarding the fact that when children’s mother tongue and the way of instruction in school is one and the same, the learning potential of the child increases. So, there comes the need that students will be taught in their mother tongue till class V. Only when this happens, the foundation of students is strengthened, Modi said
Appreciating the various debates and questions flaring up, which are bound to happen and are natural about the New Educational Policy, Modi said that all of it usher to a healthy debate. And the more debates and discussions at various forms will give a better shape to the educations system on the whole. He said the purpose of NEP is to make India strong and take it to new heights and ensure that they are ready for opportunities’.
