In a shocking development, popular TV journalist Arnab Goswami’s chats with ex-CEO of Broadcast Audience Research Council(BARC) has been leaked to the public domain and the whole chat has gone viral since.
TV rating agency BARC’s ex CEP Partho Dasgupta who is the prime accused in the TRP scam case has been in constant touch with Arnab Goswami and the chats prove it. Not just that, reportedly, Arnab was also in touch with Romil Ramgarhia who is the former COO of BARC, and Republic TV CEO Vikas Khanchandani. Partho Dasgupta is still in judicial custody while Ramgarhia and Khanchandani are out on bail.
In the leaked chats, Arnab is seen boasting about the political influence he has and has been quoted to say, “All ministers are with us”. In the same chat, he has asked for the help of the PMO which is the Prime Minister’s office; which created quite the stir. People on social media are accusing Arnab of abusing his power as a top journalist and using his political connections to steer a story a certain way. In one of the messages, BARC ex CEO allegedly sent a confidential BARC letter or document to Goswami saying that he had jammed the News Broadcasters Association and Arnab said he might even meet the PM regarding the matter.
Some messages also suggest Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) reform proposal to measure TV viewership digitally using special software installed in the set-top box would politically hurt both Republic channel and the BJP. In one of the chats, Arnab is seen writing that the Pulwama attack on our Indian Army soldiers was a big win for Republic TV which enraged the public to no limit. Arnab was seen repeatedly asking BARC CEO to make sure TRAI back down on RTV; but what is odd that the source of the leak has not been found yet and even if so, how did Whatsapp’s end-to-end encryption feature get bypassed this easily? Not only does this raise questions on Arnab, and Republic TV but also on Whatsapp’s privacy model.
