National webinar organised by CSSEIP


The Centre for Study of Social Exclusion and Inclusive Policy, (CSSEIP), Andhra University has organized a One-day National Webinar on One-day National Webinar on “Social Inclusion and Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities” on 4th December, 2020. Prof. K.Samatha, Hon’ble Rector, Andhra University, Visakhapatnam inaugurated the event. Speaking as Chief Guest on the occasion, Prof. Samatha stated that the Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) represent the most vulnerable segment of human population who face social exclusion and discrimination.

She stated that caste, class, gender, religion, age, are other factors that are impeding the fuller participation in society and resulting in fmarginalization of the PWDS. Today, there are millions of people across the world suffering from disabilities, observed Prof. Samatha.

Dr.P.Subba Rao, Director, CSSEIP, welcoming the Chief Guest, Guest of Honour, Keynote speaker and participants, stated that disability inclusion is an essential condition to upholding human rights, sustainable development, peace and security. Further, he stated that inclusion is central to the promise of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development to leave no one behind. He felt that an integrated approach is necessary to ensure PWDs are included in every facet of human life. He stated that disability inclusion in a COVID 19 response and recovery that better serves everyone, more fully suppressing the virus, as well as building back better.

Dr.K.Sita Manikyam, Associate Professor, Dr.B.R.Ambedkar College of Law and Member, Cell for Differently Abled, Andhra University graced the occasion as Guest of Honour and addressed the participants. According to her, about 15 per cent of world’s population are with some form of disability and there are some successful stories of great personalities who had overcome disabilities by their determination.

In this context, she quoted Stephen Hawking, Helen Keller and others. The PWDs need to be included; they need to be given access to health, education, employment and justice, noted Dr.K.Sita Manikyam. She discussed the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act, 2016 and UN Conventions. Keynote Speaker, Dr.M.Swarna Latha, Dept. of Sociology and Social Work delivered keynote address and highlighted various developmental models for integration of PWDS in the society.
