With the revenues of the railways having been hit due to Covid pandemic, railway officials have decided to focus on increasing the flight business for which the Railway Board has given approval for setting up of Business Development Units (BDU). Senior Officers of the Railway Board said that BDUs has got in touch with freight customers dealing with commodities like foodgrain, fertilizer, cement, sugar, food processing, power and automobiles, paper and FMCG supply chain to strengthen the supply chains. He said as most of these industries are located in the state of Haryana, Punjab, Chandigarh and Himachal Pradesh, the railways wish to serve them better and generate revenue.
Railways had come out with various concession schemes, piecemeal freight (small consignments) traffic garland trains and goods shed improvement works to attract more business and the freight customer are already showing keen interest in the proposals put forward by the division. The focus of the BDU is to bring Railways closer to the industry and trade and increase the Railway’s share in the transportation needs of various sectors. Besides, digitalization of the processes has brought in much transparency and convenience in doing business and is likely to help in the expeditious clearance of proposals for freight movement, which will benefit both the industry and the railways.
