Naval Science and Technological Laboratory (NSTL) celebrated its 51st Foundation Day (Lab Raising Day) on Friday. Established on August 20, 1969, NSTL has grown multifold and has made significant contributions to Defence R&D and is recognised as one of the premier labs of DRDO engaged in the development of underwater weapons and systems. Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the celebrations in August 2020 were postponed and organised on January 8 at Manasi Auditorium, NSTL.
Chief guest Dr G Satheesh Reddy, secretary, DDR&D and Chairman DRDO; Vice Admiral Kalidoss Srinivas and Dr Samir V Kamat, distinguished scientist and director general (Naval Systems and Materials) were the guests of honour. The programme kicked off with lighting of the lamp by Vice Admiral Srinivas, Dr OR Nandagopan, Rajeswari Devi and others. Rajeswari Devi, scientist-G and chairperson of the Lab Raising Day celebrations gave the welcome address and spoke of the various activities carried out.
Participating through videoconference, Dr Satheesh Reddy described NSTL as a ‘vibrant lab’. He appreciated the team members who went to Ulan and succeeded in heavyweight torpedo trials. Dr Satheesh Reddy assured that utmost importance is being given to the issues of employees and at the same time expected more productivity from them. He expressed his faith that NSTL will become one of the best naval labs in the world and the naval world will certainly follow NSTL in the nearby future.
Vice Admiral Srinivas spoke of the 50-year journey of NSTL and its association with Indian Navy. He appreciated NSTL for giving importance to user requirements and congratulated it for becoming a one-stop solution in research and development of underwater weapons and marine vessels. Dr Kamat, who participated through videoconference, congratulated NSTL and suggested keeping timeline in the futuristic projects and asked to focus on new generation technologies and systems and introducing cutting edge technologies like Artificial Intelligence and machine learning in the products and systems.
Dr Nandagopan described Lab Raising Day Celebration as a birthday celebration in a joint family. He spoke of the various achievements of the lab over the past year, and also the progress on the innovative technologies to meet futuristic requirements. He congratulated NSTL fraternity for showing consistent improvement in seatrials, in particular the team members who went to Ulan and succeeded in heavy weight torpedo trials.
