On Wednesday night, a priest in Cuttack beheaded a 55-year old man claiming that the human sacrifice will end the current COVID-19 pandemic.

The 70-year old priest, Sansari Ojha is a priest at Goddess Brahmani temple in the Narasinhapur block in Cuttack. He was arrested soon after the killing. He claimed to perform the sacrifice as he was ‘ordered by Goddess Brahmani in his dream’ to do so, to end the current pandemic.

According to the police, the 55-year old victim, Saroj Kumar Pradhan, was beheaded by the priest, on the temple premises on Wednesday night. He had visited the temple and was praying, bowing down his head before the idol when the priest struck him with a scythe from behind.

“During interrogation, he admitted to the murder. He claimed that the killing was ordered by the goddess,” said Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Athagarh, Alok Ranjan Ray. He added that Ojha surrendered and that the murder weapon was seized. PTI reported that Ojha and Pradhan were ganja addicts, and hailed from the same village, with unresolved disputes, often picking up fights over baseless issues.
