Off Site Mock Drill on Ammonia Toxic gas release and smell observed at Mulagada Village near the Coromandel factory


M/s Coromandel International Limited, Visakhapatnam organized Off site Emergency Mock Drill on Ammonia toxic gas release scenario at Mulagada village, near to its vicinity as per the instructions of the District Collector, Shri V. Vinay Chand.

For the last one week Emergency Preparedness awareness creation activities carried out for the Mulagada & all nearby villagers through village leaders, sachivalayam staff and volunteers, team interaction, display banners on Do’s & Don’ts in local language and also extensive cognizance through audio visuals display by mobile vehicle.

As part of the Mock Drill conducted recently, Ammonia release scenario has been postulated in the plant premises and which in turn leads to an offsite emergency in nearby Mulagada village. Ambulances and Fire tender reached the incident spot from Coromandel.

As part of mutual aid Ambulances and Fire tender from Andhra Petrochemicals limited, Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and also St. Anns hospital aided in rescue operations.

Mulagada villagers were evacuated by Coromandel rescue team to the nearest Assembly point. Coromandel has taken very good initiation to conduct Offsite Emergency Mock Drill.

Departments from District Crisis group and Govt. Officials from Police, Village sachivalayam team and NGO’s participated in the Mock Drill as part of Offsite Emergency Plan.

Shri J Siva Shankar Reddy, Joint Chief Inspector of Factories lauded Coromandel for conducting off site mock drill in a systematic manner & creating very good awareness to the community members through their various awareness programs. He appreciated the participation of the nearby mutual aid industries.

It was suggested that all the villagers to participate in this kind of mock drill conducted by industries and all should be aware about the activities to be carried out and followed during real emergency situation.

Smt.B.V.Ramani,Mandal Revenue Officer, Mulagada Mandal, Mr.Sreeram Murthy, Assistant Environmental Engineer, Pollution Control Board, , also praised the Offsite Mock Drill conducted by Coromandel International Limited.

Mr.Ravikiran,Admin, Village Secretariat, along with his staff and Volunteers identified the victims in the village by taking the head count and informed the rescue team for further medical attention.

Mr. Gnana Sundaram M ,Sr.AVP-Manufacturing explained about the preventive measures being taken by the industry continuously to ensure the safe plant operation. They also explained about simple steps to be followed in case of Ammonia release.

1. Wet cloth to be used as mask
2. Move perpendicular to the wind direction
3. Move to the ground floor and not to move upstairs.
4. If not close all doors and windows stay inside the house until rescue arrives.
The Senior Management from Coromandel including Mr. Ranga Kumar K, Mr. Rajasekhar K, Mr. Srikanth and Mr. Sharma were present along with HR, Safety and CSR representatives and successfully completed the mock drill, thus reinforcing the confidence among the communities around the Coromandel.
