Olympian Anju Bobby Georg has proved to everyone that beating odds with determination and hard work will get you anything you want. The star athlete of India who is now working with the Customs department in Chennai took to Twitter to reveal that she reached the top with major health issues including having just one kidney and she even said that most painkillers never worked for her as she was allergic. This is her story.
Born on 19th April 1977 in Cheeranchira, Kerala, her family was a Syrian Orthodox family and because of her father, she got interested in athletics. She did her schooling in CKM Koruthode School and graduated from Vimala College. In the school athletic meet 1991-92, she won the 100 meters hurdles and relay and came second in the long jump and high jump which made her the women’s champion. When she won 3rd place in 100 meters hurdles and 4×10 meters relay she got notices by scouts and got national prominence.
She started her career as a heptathlete but later she focussed on her long jump event which got her a medal in the 1996 Delhi junior Asian championship. She even set a national record for a triple jump in the Bangalore Federation Cup in 1999. Her popularity and discipline in the sport grew and she started doing even well. She won the bronze medal clearing 6.49 meters at the 2002 Commonwealth Games at Manchester. She also won the gold medal at the Asian Games in Busan.
She even made history when she won the bronze medal for a long jump in the 2003 World Championships in Athletics in Paris, which made her the first Indian athlete ever to win a medal in the World Championships in Athletics. She achieved her personal best of 6.83 meters at the 2004 Olympic Games at Athens that brought her fifth position. This is the current Indian national record even today.
The Indian government has conferred her with the prestigious Arjuna Award and even the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna along with Padma Shri in 2004. She was ranked 28th on the rankings of International Association of Athletics Federations but she was also ranked number 4 once making her one of the best in the business. She did all of that with one KIDNEY and she even said that she was allergic to most pain killers making her recovery, journey, and success painful but extremely important not only for her but for her country as well.
