Only 37 percent of places of worship or religious places in Vizag city are covered by CCTV surveillance. Vizag city has a total of 1,580 places of worship – 1,223 temples, 263 churches and 95 masjids – according to information furnished by the Vizag city police. Of these, only 598 religious places are covered by CCTV surveillance while the rest are left to the Protection of the Almighty.
The police data also mentioned that 1,533 such places of worship are properly illuminated and 620 are ‘safe’ due to the presence of security guards and volunteers. With the recent incidents of desecration of places of worship in Andhra Pradesh triggering tension, city police held meetings with committee members of various temples and conducted the safety audit of temples. Also, Circle Inspectors, along with personnel visited the places of worship in their jurisdiction to inspect the security arrangements and availability of resources.
The police came out with some plans such as some volunteers must sleep in temples, created beats in every police station limits, not allow drunkards to roam near shrines, verify the modus operandi of criminals and keep tabs on their movements and take help of Mahila police for the security of the temples.
On Monday, Gopalapatnam police in Vizag city verified the security measures at the famous Sri Varahalakshmi Nrusimha Swamy Temple at Simhachalam and also the temples located down of the hill such as Bairava Kona, Pydimamba, Bangaruthalli, and Sri Venkateswara Swamy shrines. The police have observed that temple authorities recently posted four security guards at Bairavakona Temple and Sri Venkateswara Swamy temple and installed 16 new CC cameras. Similarly, city police examined the security measures at various temples in the city and asked the committee members of the temples to improve the security measures to prevent any untoward incidents.
