Vizag police will verify the credentials of auto-rickshaw drivers and allow only those with no history of crime and traffic violations to ply their vehicle at night in the city. While 3,500 auto drivers have already been verified, another 1,500 will be added to the list.
Auto-rickshaws plying in Vizag city limits will now have a unique numbering system for identification. As per the new system, the auto-rickshaw drivers will be verified by traffic and crime wing police with a database to fish out their history and a unique number will be allotted to each vehicle. The police have initiated the process after observing that some of the auto-rickshaw drivers have been indulging in crime to earn easy money.
Drivers of the three-wheelers will be required to get the number painted along with the name of the respective police station limits on the front, left, right, and rear of the vehicles. The police have decided to take up this initiative to curb crime. A senior police officer said that with more and more auto-rickshaws hitting the roads for the past few years, coupled with issues like change in ownership of the vehicles and address, the department has decided on a unique numbering system to identify the owner and driver.
Speaking to Hello Vizag, ADCP (Traffic) Ch Adinarayana said there are around 25,000 autorickshaws plying in Vizag city limits. The traffic police will collect details of the drivers, authenticate these details, cross-check violations by the drivers, and other misdemeanors. Later, the crime wing police will cross-check if there is any criminal history of the drivers.
“If the auto-driver is found to have committed any crime against passengers, or had been an accused in dacoity, burglary, robbery, or other cases, we will not allot the unique number to those people. As per the new system, if the auto-rickshaw driver commits any crimes, he can be traced on the basis of the vehicle’s unique number,” he added.
