In a serious setback to the Covid treatment in Visakhapatnam, around 200 doctors working in various hospitals contacted the virus. The city has 2,000 doctors half of whom are working at King George Hospital, the biggest in the coastal Andhra Pradesh under the government sector, and the rest in other hospitals spread across the city.
The doctors include post-graduate students of various medical colleges in the city. According to a senior medical official connected to the Covid treatment and management in the city, the district administration has the twin task of filling the vacancies of the sick doctors and finding new professionals to manage the proposed new Covid Care Centres coming up in a big way and few hospitals.
Sources said the doctors went into isolation at their homes, hotels and other places for the safety of others. As a good measure, the management of Ramanaidu studios on the beach road offered free rooms to the doctors seeking isolation.
In a statement, the filmmaker and owner of the studios Daggubati Suresh and Abhiram Babu said this is the least they could do to the doctors who have been working round the clock to save lives. They said isolation rooms were given a facelift to suit the needs of the medical professionals.
