About 60 percent of the newly elected corporators of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation are graduates. In all, GVMC has 98 corporators and is the biggest corporation in Andhra Pradesh. As per the details submitted by the winning candidates during the filing of nominations, most of the candidates are educated and some of them even did post-graduation.
The GVMC sources said that the winning candidates are not only with good academic qualifications but from different professional backgrounds too. The leaders from major political parties in Vizag said educational qualification was also taken into consideration while distributing tickets to the candidates. “In a cosmopolitan city like Vizag, corporators should be educated enough to understand the issues going on so that they could give their full participation in the execution of the civic body duties,” said a ruling party leader.
YSRCP won 58 wards, while TDP bagged 30 wards in the 98- ward GVMC elections. Moreover, half of the 98 wards in the GVMC were reserved for women in keeping with Chief Minister YS Jaganmohan Reddy’s pre-poll promise to give equal status to women. Women corporators expressed confidence that they would try their level best to live up to the expectation of the public and resolve their issues.
“We have to use the digital medium including social networking platforms to reach out to the ward public and bring their issues to the notice of concerned authority. Vizag city will have various smart projects and education background will largely help to understand and actively participate in the civic body administration,” stated the corporators. As many as 567 candidates were in the fray for 98 wards in eight zones in the GVMC elections held on March 10.
