Padmanabha Swamy Temple: A temple full of mysteries

The name of this place means “The city of Lord Ananta” and comes with a lot of wonders. The temple’s name is Padmanabhaswamy temple. The temple is built in a beautiful mix of the Cheera style and the Dravidian style of architecture, which has high walls, and a 16th-century gopura. The main deity in this temple is Lord Vishnu in his yogic sleep posture. But the temple’s history goes way back.

The temple is currently under a trust headed by Travancore’s royal family. The Maharajahs of Travancore are the mighty Cheras and descendants of the great saint Kulasbrkhara Alvar. The temple is extremely sacred in the Hindu faith and it is said that only those who profess the Hindu faith are permitted entry to the temple. Devotees have to strictly follow a dress code. The temple is also one of 108 Divya Desams and acts as one of the principal centers of worship of the deity in Vaishnavism. The platforms in front of where the deity rests is carved out of a single massive stone, making it one of the best-made temples in India.

Among the six Kallaras or chambers in the temple, Bharatakkon Kallara (Chamber B) is the most mysterious. It is not a part of the temple treasury but holds a massive amount of treasure in it. In 2011, the Supreme Court of India sent 7 members of a committee to open the vaults in the temple. 6 of the vaults were opened. It contained diamond jewelry, golden utensils, weapons, golden idols, golden elephant idols, and diamond necklaces having 500 kilograms weight and 18 feet length and bags full of golden coins of different nations.

Chamber B of the temple however is the most secretive and cannot be opened by just any human. It can only be opened by a super-strong Saadhu and Mantrika who know the “Naga Bandham” or “Naga Pasam”; they should also know the “ Garuda Mantra”. This mantra is extremely important for this vault and without its knowledge, the vault cannot be opened. If any human tries to open it with brut strength, then all havoc will be wrecked upon India.

According to many accounts, in the 1930s, some people tried to open this vault because of greed and impatience, the moment they tried opening it, a couple of giant snakes snuck up to them. A temple that is so important to people in Kerala also has an intriguing history to it.
