The crucial polls to urban local bodies across Andhra Pradesh are underway with necessary arrangements made by the State Election Commission. As everybody knows that every election is important for any political party worth its salt, these elections are more so for the two main political players in the State – the TDP and the ruling party. Polls to Vijayawada and Vizag municipal corporations are keenly watched and considered high stakes in the wake of the state government’s three-capitals plan.
It may be noted that these civic polls are also seen as a referendum on YSRCP’s governance because polls are being held two years after YS Jaganmohan Reddy came to power. YSRCP has been exuding confidence of bagging all the urban local bodies, continuing its victory march, while the TDP, that is facing an existential crisis, is leaving no stone unturned to outsmart the ruling party in this do-or-die battle.
Accordingly, TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu and his son Nara Lokesh have toured important towns and cities over the last few days for campaigning but whereas Jagan has not campaigned at all for either the gram panchayat polls or the urban local bodies. N Chandrababu Naidu, the TDP supremo addressed more than 10 press conferences during the gram panchayat polls. He also toured important cities and towns across the state especially Vizag, Vijayawada and Guntur and addressed many roadshows trying to ignite passions of self-respect among the voters. Lokesh too toured many places.
For Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy, it is the belief that his work will speak for himself. He didn’t even issue a video appeal seeking votes, leave alone campaigning on the ground. He also did not hold even a single press conference.
