Former UPSC chairman and academician Prof KS Chalam on Thursday alleged that thousands of farmers who gave their farm lands for the construction of the Visakhapatnam Steel Plant were deprived of employment because of some vested interests. “Thousand of farmers were displaced while acquiring lands for setting u of Vizag steel plant. Still, now, R Card holders are being deprived of employment in the steel plant, he alleged.
Speaking at the ongoing agitation against privatization of VSP which entered its 14th day on Thursday, Prof Chalam said in spite of farmers having R cards, they could not get employment in the Vizag Steel plant till this day. Few guileful elements with the help of some selfish political leaders, who had migrated from other districts, took advantage of the situation, bought them off for a low price and provided them with menial jobs in unorganized sectors,” he said.
He said according to the recent reports, these elements with the help of big corporate entities, have drawn a grandiose plan to grab most of the public land, including unused RINL land, for their selfish gains,’’ Prof Chalam said. Meanwhile, thousands of workers unions from different organisations converged at the dharna point to join the ongoing agitation. The relay hunger strike was launched on February 12 by all the major trade unions. Roadblock and many more agitations will be come up in the ensuing days by all the trade unions.
