There are many fascinating stories and official procedure associated with 15th August. Here’s a peak into some of them. On the eve of the Independence Day, the President gives his Address to the Nation, talking of progress and development, and inspiring the people to our difficulties and take the country to greater heights.

The Prime Minister, in his address on 15th August, informs the people of the achievements of the Nation and outlines the social and progressive goals of the country. Both the Prime Minister and the President acknowledge the sacrifices made by our freedom fighters who Gave the country its Independence. The day is then celebrated by witnessing march pasts and parades throughout the country, singing of patriotic songs and showcasing of our cultural diversity. The National Anthem is also sung proudly on this day.

Various military and paramilitary contingents also march past after the speech is delivered, followed by the showcasing of cultural events highlighting the ethos of the country towards gaining independence. Similar events are hosted in all State Capitals across the country.

Independence Day, is marked as a public holiday in India, where the National Flag is customarily hoisted in all Central and State Government buildings. The month of August marks the anniversary of Independence and its different from New Year. New Year is calendrical, but August 15 is historical. A new year summons anticipation, a sense of looking beyond and moving beyond but Independence Day invites, a need for judgment and evaluation.

There are many fascinating facts and stories associated with this day over the years. It is said that no national anthem was sung on Independence Day in 1947, as Jana Gana Mana officially recognised in 1950! The Viceroy Lord Mountbatten had chosen 15th August as the day for the country’s independence because it was the date of the second anniversary of Japan’s surrender during the Second World War!
