In a bid to create awareness about road safety among the general public in Vizag, a month-long Road Safety Awareness Month kick-started on Monday for empowering good traffic sense and knowledge amongst all sections of our society with the help of extensive training programmes and pertinent traffic education.
Inaugurating the 32nd Road Safety Awareness Month at the Collectorate, Tourism Minister Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao has directed officials to hold discussions with Principals of colleges and schools and organise awareness programmes at educational institutions to drive home the road safety message among the future citizens.
Speaking on the occasion, he underscored the dire need for creating proper awareness among road users on the road rules before they could be strictly enforced. He also said that the State government was committed to reducing road accidents by improving road infrastructure. The main objective of this awareness programme is to minimize road accidents and thereby saving precious lives on the roads. He directed the enforcement officials to initiate strict action against those indulging in ‘drink and drive’ and driving without helmets and seat belts.
Speaking to Hello Vizag, Tourism Minister Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao said that various studies conducted over the years revealed that in Vizag pedestrians are most vulnerable to road accidents, accounting to almost half, of the recorded fatalities every year. It has thus become imperative to inculcate good traffic sense and knowledge amongst the children and the youth of this great city who would soon become the torch bearers of tomorrow
A variety of programmes related to road safety will be organized throughout the month at various places in Vizag to enlighten people on road safety, driving rules and cautions. During the whole month celebration of this campaign, a variety of educational banners, safety posters, safety films, pocket guides and leaflets related to the road safety are distributed to the on-road travellers. Commuters will be explained about the methods and necessities of the road safety and how they must understand the use of helmets or seat belts while driving on the road or anywhere. Many NGOs will be participating to create awareness about road safety.
